Before St. Clare Hospital opened its new Radiation Oncology Center in October 2005, cancer patients drove an hour or more, five days a week, to Madison and back, for radiation therapy, a treatment that lasts about 15 minutes. These daily trips for weeks on end were both exhausting and an inconvenience for their family members and friends who made the daily trips with them. Now, these patients are getting their cancer care closer to home at St. Clare Hospital. Baraboo.
Dr. Michael W. Zinda is the new center’s oncologist. “We realize there is a need, for those going through an exhausting physical and emotional battle, to provided resources for Baraboo-area cancer patients in their own neighborhood,” says Dr. Zinda. Previously, the closest treatment centers were in Madison, including Turville Bay MRI and Radiation Oncology Center, a partner with St. Clare where Dr. Zinda is Medical Director.
The average radiation oncology treatment is prescribed daily for four to six weeks, using technology called a linear accelerator. Specially trained radiation therapists provide the state-of-the-art treatment. “St. Clare’s patients come from 16 different zip codes, all within 30 minutes of our facility,” says Sandy Anderson, St. Clare Hospital & Health Services President. “The stories these patients share with us really validate the need for this service. We saw first hand the personal struggles of patients who had to cope with physical and emotional pain in addition to a great deal of driving.”
