What happened when Laura and Tammy met for an annual checkup? "We clicked," Tammy said.
Tammy Pate has been a patient at SSM Health Dean Medical Group - Portage for over 14 years. Last year, when her previous caregiver retired, Tammy, a rural carrier for the United States Postal Service, was referred to Family Nurse Practitioner Laura Ballweg.
Have the two gotten to know each other since then? "Yes we have," Tammy says with a laugh. "We clicked. Laura has been very good–guiding me, understanding me and listening to me."
"Tammy originally came to see me for an annual physical," said Laura. "As a part of any wellness visit I ask my patients what their interests are, what they like to do, about their family, how they like to spend their time. I just like to get to know my patients."
"It came up that we both like camping and taking vacations." Tammy said. "We have some of the same interests in terms of reading and camping and travel. Family is very important. It's neat to talk back and forth."
Laura says that patients like Tammy are what drew her to Portage in the first place. "I just love the feeling of community and closeness and the concept of working as a care team." Family oriented. That's how we feel in the clinic, both with our patients and among the staff. We really get along well, work well together, care about each other as individuals. It's how we feel about our patients as well."
